Voice Assistants are becoming increasingly popular, as they offer hands-free control of your computer. This build introduces Voice Access to Windows, which is an AI assistant that will let you control your system with voice commands alone.

If you haven’t already heard, Windows 11 Build 22518 is now available in the Dev Channel for all Insiders.
Unlike prior upgrades, however, build 22518 includes a slew of new features and enhancements to major sections of the operating system, including File Explorer, widgets, navigation, and more.
Let’s get right in and explore what this new preview edition delivers to Windows 11.
You may now use your voice to navigate your PC.
This version includes new preview features that are not bound to a single Windows release like 22H2. The major reason for this is because Dev Channel is used for the Nickel active development branch.
One of the most noticeable improvements is the addition of Voice Access, which Microsoft claims would benefit anybody who uses Windows 11.
You can use your voice to open and switch programs, read and write mail, and surf the internet using the voice access function, which employs on-device speech recognition.
The silver lining is that, since all processing takes place on-device rather than in the cloud, voice access doesn’t need a constant internet connection.
In the Settings menu, you may select to have voice access start automatically the next time you sign in to your PC.
You may also manage whether voice access is listening or not listening by using voice commands or keyboard shortcuts like Alt + Shift + C and Alt + Shift + B.
Windows 11 also has a Spotlight collection.
Right now, you can utilize the Spotlight collection to update your lock screen graphics with new gorgeous photographs from across the globe on a regular basis, as well as learn intriguing details about each picture.
This option is available in the Settings app’s Personalization menu, and if enabled, the Windows desktop will automatically refresh with new desktop photos.

- Based on user input, the context menu in File Explorer has been updated to make these choices top level:
- When right-clicking font and.inf files, choose “Install.”
- When right-clicking on.cer files, choose “Install certificate.”
- When right-clicking on This PC, choose “Map network drive” and “Disconnect network drive.”
- When right-clicking on network drives, choose “Disconnect.”
- The option to create unique emoji combinations based on family members’ faces and skin tones, couples with hearts, kissing, and individuals holding hands, which we started rolling out with Build 22504, is now accessible to all Dev Channel Insiders.
- We started rolling out a feature to show your time and date on the taskbars of your secondary monitor or displays starting with Build 22509. All Insiders on the Dev Channel now have access to this.
- For Simplified Chinese IME users, a new extra-large candidate height option has been added under Personalization > Text Input in Settings.
Fixes
[Taskbar]
- An explorer.exe crash caused by webpages pinned to the Taskbar was fixed.
[Search]
- I worked on a solution to a problem where an invisible window frame for the recent searches flyout may get trapped on the screen and consume input in that region.
- When you hover over items in the recent searches flyout, truncated text in the flyout will now display a tooltip so you can view the full text (for example, when using the accessibility option to make text bigger).
- If a contrast setting was enabled, the text in the recent searches flyout was more visible.
- When a screen reader focuses on the recent searches flyout, instead of merely saying button, it now has an accessible name.
- For individuals using the Chinese display language, a bug was fixed that caused the search icon in the recent searches icon to become a trash character.
- A high-impact Search crash has been fixed.
- I did some work to assist lessen the risk of keystrokes being lost when you start typing after clicking the Windows key.
- If you use Search to execute commands, the “Run as administrator” and “Open file location” choices on the side of the search window should be displayed again for you to pick. Furthermore, CTRL + Shift + Enter should now work for commands.
[File Explorer] (Windows)
- Fixed an issue that might prevent users from adding network drives as sources in Media Player.
- After compressing a file, you may now see an unexpected blank icon instead of the one corresponding to your usual program for handling that file type.
- When the “run as a separate process” option is selected, right-clicking on a folder and then immediately closing and returning the File Explorer window should no longer result in an explorer.exe crash.
- When relocating user account folders to another place, certain unexpected characters were removed from the dialog.
- Instead of presenting a generic icon when right clicking on files like.htm in File Explorer, the icon next to Microsoft Edge Canary, Beta, or Dev should now appear appropriately (if installed) under Open With.
- A bug was fixed that caused icons for program entries (like Windows Terminal) in the context menu to disappear or become invisible on occasion.
- When contrast mode was activated, the background color of the command bar and menu dropdowns became more consistent.
- I made a few additional minor tweaks to enhance the speed of File Explorer’s folder navigation.
[Input]
- When you return to the main page after pressing WIN + Period and navigating to the emoji or gifs area with a search phrase, we’ll empty away the search query so you may start again.
- When typing into Search soon after launching your PC, the IME candidate window should now show more consistently.
- When typing with the Simplified Chinese IME, u-mode, v-mode, and name-mode were not presenting candidates.
- The Japanese IME was unexpectedly showing candidates in horizontal mode instead of vertical mode, which was fixed.
- Fixed an issue where the IME toolbar would appear on the lock screen at random.
- After hitting WIN + Period, the keyboard focus wouldn’t always be in the appropriate location, depending on where you’d left it the previous time you used the window.
- The UI should no longer suddenly dismiss when you click the white space while customizing your family emoji in the emoji panel.
- The customisation UI should no longer be triggered by clicking on your customised family emoji in the emoji panel’s most frequently used list.
- If you attempt to start voice typing (WIN + H) without first moving the attention to a text field, the popup advising you transfer the focus should now function.
[Windowing]
- After moving a group window to a separate Desktop, the snap group thumbnails in Task View were not updating in real time.
[Settings]
- For certain Insiders, a problem that caused Settings to crash when trying to open settings for new languages was fixed.
- On the Text Input page under Personalization, we fixed a few bugs, including:
- The preview picture for your current configuration should now appear.
- A few keywords have been added to aid in the search for this page.
- Screen reader users will benefit from a better readout of the website.
- When you search for the term widgets, you should now be sent to the relevant Settings page, which has that option.
[Other]
- Insiders with particular devices may have been encountering bug checks with the error SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION on recent flights, which has been resolved.
- Users upgrading from Builds 22000.xxx or older to newer Dev Channel builds using the most recent Dev Channel ISO no longer get the following warning message: Flight Signed is the build you’re attempting to install. Enable flight signing to continue installing.
- Removed some extra padding on the left side of the boot logo, which made it seem off-center in comparison to the progress wheel.
- When attempting to elevate specific applications, UAC displayed “Unknown program” unexpectedly, despite the fact that they had valid names.
- When tabbing to win32 text boxes, Narrator would sometimes state “No item in view,” which was fixed.
- In the previous two flights, we fixed a crash that was causing login difficulties in OOBE (if you reset your PC), as well as troubles resetting your PIN from the lock screen.

[General]
- DWM is crashing (causing the screen to flash continuously) while attempting to utilize specific programs, according to Insider reports.
[Start]
- When using Search from Start or the taskbar, you may be unable to input text in certain circumstances. If the problem persists, open the Run dialog box by pressing WIN + R on the keyboard, then dismiss it.
[Taskbar]
- When switching input methods, the taskbar may sometimes flash.
- When the network icon is meant to be there on the taskbar, it sometimes isn’t. If this happens, try restarting explorer.exe using Task Manager.
- If you have several displays attached to your computer and right-click on the date and time on your main monitor’s taskbar, explorer.exe will crash.
[Search]
- The Search panel may not open after clicking the Search button on the Taskbar. Restart the “Windows Explorer” process and reopen the search panel if this happens.
[Settings]
- The signal strength indicators do not represent the true signal strength while browsing the list of accessible Wi-Fi networks.
[Widgets]
- The Widgets button may vanish from the taskbar if the taskbar orientation is changed.
- When hovering the entrance point on a separate monitor, the Widgets board may not have the right resolution.
- It’s possible that the Widgets board will be empty for a while.
- When using hover to access the widgets board, links may not open correctly.
- When using multiple monitors, the content of Widgets on the taskbar may go out of sync.

- Some punctuation marks and symbols, such as the @ sign, are not recognized correctly.
